Alhama Street Animal Protection – ASAP
Since coming to Spain I have been involved with the local dog charity ASAP. We take in as many of the stray street dogs that we can from Alhama de Granada and the surrounding villages. After taking these dogs in, generally malnourished and covered in ticks, we take them for a visit to our local, friendly and helpful vet Calixto, for a check-up.

Firstly, the dogs are given worming tablets and anti-parasite treatmet, then once the dogs have put on sufficient weight we can then start the process of having them vaccinated, microchipped, castration (if over a year old) and finally a rabies shot followed by a brand new Passport. This has taken care of their physical wellbeing and then we have the slow process of rebuilding their faith in humans, socialising them and showing them that life can be fun!!

It is very difficult to find Forever Homes for rescue dogs in Spain, so we have collaborated with a new re-homing agency in the Netherlands – Stichting Hondenzorg en Welzijn (http://hondenzorgenwelzijn.nl/). Since ASAP’s creation we have successfully rehomed around 150 dogs.

As with all charities, in order for ASAP to operate successfully, we require funding and foster carers and, as with all charities, we lack both!!

Unfortunately, the cost of caring for each puppy or dog is rarely covered by the income we receive through release fees from the adoption agencies. Foster carers are the ‘heart’ & ‘soul’ of ASAP and have the most rewarding job of all. However, there are simply not enough of us to cope with the ever-increasing demand.

ASAP rely on generous resource and financial donations and are always grateful for food parcels, old towels, blankets, toys etc., and monetary donations can be made via your Paypal account or directly into our bank account at Caja Rural.

Please follow our activities on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ASAPGranada

If any one would like to make a donation to ASAP – thank you!
